Pets feel the stress of relocation to another home just like any other family member. When moving with your pets try to minimize their stress by minimizing their exposure in changes in their routine, a constant presents of you with them will go a long way towards easing their stress.
Your first step would be is to consult your veterinarian, your veterinarian may recommend medications to ease their stress, as well yours. Obtain medical records and make sure vaccinations are up to date, medical records will be required if transporting your pets on certain third party carriers or to another country.
Take your pets with in the car if possible. Your pets will feel safer and more comfortable with you than with strangers. If travel is by car, you should get your pet accustomed to car travel. Take shorts trips then gradually increase time. Alternatively, there are a number of pet transportation companies that specialize in transporting pets globally for a nominal charge. Household moving companies are not permitted to transport pets in moving vans and bus companies will only accept Seeing Eye Dogs only. If considering an airline, pets can ride in the baggage compartments, give yourself ample time to research airline regulations.
Once you know your new home address remember to get updated tags as soon as possible. During the moving process ensure your pet is wearing their updated identification tags that includes collars and tags with updated contact information and ensure extra water and food is available in case of emergency.
At your new home location re-establish old routines as soon as possible.
The key to a smooth trouble free move is a moving guide check list with careful planning and preparation. Taking the time to plan these decisions and activities that you will need to address, will pay dividends on your pet moving day.
